Underground Utility Foreman

The Underground Utility Foreman oversees underground utility installation on assigned construction projects, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, and within budget. This position leads field crews, coordinates with Sitework Superintendent, and ensures adherence to project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate brings deep technical knowledge of underground construction practices, exceptional leadership abilities, and a proactive approach to safety and quality.
 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  â€¢ Supervise and manage an underground utility crew including excavation, installation, and backfilling of water, sanitary, storm, and related utility scopes.
  â€¢ Plan, schedule, and coordinate daily activities with field crews, other foremen, project managers, Sitework Superintendent and subcontractors to meet project milestones.
  â€¢ Enforce and model safety protocols in accordance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies; lead daily safety briefings and ensure all work is conducted safely.
  â€¢ Review construction plans and specifications to ensure understanding of scope, sequence, and schedule.
  â€¢ Monitor field productivity and quality, ensuring that work is being completed to standards and specifications.
  â€¢ Work closely with project management and engineering teams to resolve field issues and implement solutions efficiently.
  â€¢ Track daily progress and quantities.  Maintain material inventory and needs for specific projects.
  â€¢ Participate in pre-construction planning and constructability reviews for underground scopes as needed.
  â€¢ Mentor and train crew members; provide feedback and support workforce development.
  â€¢ Collaborate with vendors, inspectors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
  â€¢ Regional travel as needed to the Columbus, Cleveland, and Detroit areas.
 

SKILLS

  â€¢ Extensive knowledge of underground utility installation (storm, sanitary, water, gas, etc.).
  â€¢ Proven track record of managing crews and subcontractors on civil underground projects.
  â€¢ Strong understanding of safety regulations and field practices. OSHA 30 Certification preferred.
  â€¢ Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications.
  â€¢ Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  â€¢ Ability to figure grades and set up lasers.  Ability to operate GPS rovers for as-builts and minor layout
 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  â€¢ Minimum of 10 years of experience in underground utility or civil construction, with at least 5 years in a foreman role.
  â€¢ Union membership required. Non-union candidates can be sponsored upon employment.
  â€¢ Excavation Competent Person training preferred.
  â€¢ State of Ohio fire line installers license a plus.
